Themes describe the psychological and emotional unpredictability that was relentless in daily life whilst parenting a child diagnosed with ASD complicated by outbursts of aggressive behaviour. Anticipation of potentially traumatic events was expressed as constant. The powerful emotions of frustration, empathy, pity and an intense need to protect the child with ASD who displays aggression were in contrast with felt stigma and societal criticism. In time, they developed their own pragmatic survival strategies for functioning as a family that could accommodate each family member’s needs as much as possible. Psychological well-being became a balance of striving for personal psychological growth despite the constancy of anticipatory traumatic events. Future research and implications are discussed.]]> Tue 15 Jan 2019 15:32:03 AEDT ]]> The physiological and psychological effects of ostracism in adults with ASD https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:34808 Tue 14 May 2019 10:28:14 AEST ]]> Mothers’ self-report of their wellbeing and the effectiveness of early intensive behavioural intervention for their children with autism spectrum disorder https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:23554 Tue 08 May 2018 16:17:57 AEST ]]> The relationship between pitch contours in infant-directed speech and early signs of autism in infancy https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:53501 Thu 30 Nov 2023 15:58:12 AEDT ]]> The Use of Robots in Social Communications and Interactions for Individuals with ASD: a Systematic Review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:42692 Thu 01 Sep 2022 09:27:26 AEST ]]> Issues in the use of visual supports to promote communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorder https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:8274 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:33:28 AEDT ]]> Characterization of a 520 kb deletion on chromosome 15q26.1 including ST8SIA2 in a patient with behavioral disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and epilepsy https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21459 ST8SIA2, C15orf32, and FAM174B. Alpha-2,8-Sialyltransferase 2 (ST8SIA2) is expressed in the developing brain and appears to play an important role in neuronal migration, axon guidance and synaptic plasticity. It has recently been implicated in a genome wide association study as a potential factor underlying autism, and has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. This case provides supportive evidence that ST8SIA2 haploinsufficiency may play a role in neurobehavioral phenotypes.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:05:45 AEDT ]]> Problem eating behaviors in autism spectrum disorder are associated with suboptimal daily nutrient intake and taste/smell sensitivity https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21289 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:54:35 AEDT ]]> Sensory features of toddlers at risk for autism spectrum disorder https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:25848 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:25:57 AEDT ]]> Breathing and behaviour: exploring infant temperament and autism risk in infants born to mothers with asthma https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37146 Mon 24 Aug 2020 09:21:09 AEST ]]> Evidence does not support the use of Rapid Prompting Method (RPM) as an intervention for students with autism spectrum disorder and further primary research is not justified (review) https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:25553 Mon 23 Sep 2019 10:30:36 AEST ]]> The temperament features associated with autism spectrum disorder in childhood: A systematic review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:40908 Mon 13 Nov 2023 14:31:28 AEDT ]]> Infant and Child-Directed Speech Used with Infants and Children at Risk or Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a Scoping Review https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:44551 Mon 13 May 2024 10:21:14 AEST ]]> A critical synthesis of barriers and facilitators to the use of AAC by children with autism spectrum disorder and their communication partners https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:42825 Mon 05 Sep 2022 11:56:26 AEST ]]> Hyperactive behavior and altered brain morphology in adult complement C3a receptor deficient mice https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:39237 -/-) mice were reported to exhibit subtle deficit in recall memory. Here, we subjected 3 months old male C3aR-/- mice to a battery of behavioral tests and examined their brain morphology. We found that the C3aR-/- mice exhibit a short-term memory deficit and increased locomotor activity, but do not show any signs of autistic behavior as assessed by self-grooming behavior. We also found regional differences between the C3aR-/- and wild-type (WT) mice in the morphology of motor and somatosensory cortex, as well as amygdala and hippocampus. In summary, constitutive absence of C3aR signaling in mice leads to neurodevelopmental abnormalities that persist into adulthood and are associated with locomotive hyperactivity and altered cognitive functions.]]> Fri 27 May 2022 13:50:26 AEST ]]> Differential outcome subgroups in children with autism spectrum disorder attending early intervention https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:42612 Fri 26 Aug 2022 15:05:18 AEST ]]> Neurophysiological Correlates of Sensory-Based Phenotypes in ASD https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:48901 Fri 14 Apr 2023 15:38:42 AEST ]]>
